Marcus is by all means a normal, healthy, fun-loving 10 year old boy. On October 10th, he developed a fever followed by numerous other concerning symptoms. He was seen several times by doctors before we made the decision to take him to Primary Children’s Hospital on October 16th as we had no answers as to what was going on in his little body. After a lumbar puncture and MRI, the diagnosis was tentatively made as viral meningitis. However, tests could not identify any viral or bacterial infection. Marcus’s neuro status declined rapidly to the point where he could barely stay awake, was very confused with no short term memory, could not eat or drink, was barely able to walk, constant tremors and bowel and bladder issues. He again underwent MRI and lumbar puncture which showed a significantly worse brain/spinal cord inflammation which was more consistent with an autoimmune process. Essentially, he has an unknown auto-immune disease and his body is attacking his brain and spinal cord. Marcus was started on therapies immediately and after 12 days in the hospital, he was released to come “home.” Unfortunately, Marcus will require several weeks-months of therapies and medications as well as close follow-up by several providers. We are staying with family for the time being as our actual home is 4 hours from Salt Lake – so our family has been uprooted for the time being. It is unclear if Marcus will recover 100%, but we are optimistic that he will get back to himself – the funny, outgoing, smart, active boy who loves to play baseball, video games and excels in school.
