Medical cannabis is often discussed as a solution for chronic pain but the science is more nuanced than many headlines suggest.
Not all pain is the same. Neuropathic pain, inflammatory pain, and central pain behave differently in the body, and they respond differently to treatment. Current research suggests that medical cannabis may provide modest relief for certain types of chronic neuropathic pain, particularly when conventional therapies fall short. At the same time, evidence remains limited or mixed for many other pain conditions, and cannabis is not a cure-all.
Responsible care starts with education, realistic expectations, and individualized evaluation. Patients deserve clear guidance on what medical cannabis may help with pain and just as importantly, what it doesn’t.

Nervana Medical was founded in 2022 by Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Cassandra (Cassie) Debenham. Cassie has over 15 years of experience in health care. The majority of her career was spent in Intensive Care Medicine and as a flight nurse. She was the recipient of Intermountain Healthcare’s Nurse Practitioner Clinical Excellence award in 2018 and is a member of the American Society of Ketamine Physicians Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Academy of Innovative and Preventative Medicine, and the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine.
