Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a treatment …

Hormones play a vital role in our daily functioning, serving as messengers from our brain that tell our organs how to function.  Everything from our metabolism to the health of our skin is impacted by the balance of hormones in our body, so it’s understandable that hormone imbalances can make daily functioning difficult.

As we reach middle age our natural hormone production begins to steadily decline resulting in an insufficiency of hormones to regulate normal body functions.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) involves using hormones that are structurally identical to those produced by the body to replace any deficiencies or imbalances that may be causing symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and fatigue. Many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and Alzheimer’s have been considered an outcome of aging rather than viewing aging as a disease itself.BHRT, when combined with a healthy diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation has been shown to slow the aging process by stopping cellular degeneration.

Unlike traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which typically involves using synthetic hormones derived from animal sources or made in a laboratory, BHRT uses hormones that are derived from plant sources and are structurally identical to the hormones produced by the human body. These hormones are often compounded by a pharmacist to create a customized treatment plan for each patient.

The most commonly used hormones in BHRT are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Estrogen is often used to alleviate symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. Progesterone is often used in combination with estrogen to protect against the increased risk of uterine cancer that can occur with estrogen use alone. Testosterone can be used in both men and women to address symptoms such as low libido, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

Hormonal imbalances can take place at any age and affect both men and women. Many women experience side effects when dealing with menopause and hormone imbalance. Unstable hormone levels can lead to chronic symptoms and disorders that can disrupt daily activity.

The primary hormone of importance in females is estrogen, which exists in three different forms in the body: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3). Other important hormones include progesterone (P4), testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). These substances may help restore natural balance in the body and may help alleviate chronic symptoms arising from imbalance.

It is important to note that BHRT is not appropriate for everyone, and there are potential risks and side effects associated with any hormone therapy. Before considering BHRT, a thorough evaluation of a patient’s medical history, current health status, and hormone levels must be performed. BHRT should only be prescribed by a healthcare provider who is experienced in its use and monitoring. If BHRT is deemed appropriate, it is typically administered through creams, gels, or pellets that are applied topically or inserted under the skin. Patients will require regular monitoring of their hormone levels and symptoms to ensure that their treatment plan is effective and safe.

Our BHRT program starts with an initial consultation with your provider where you will discuss your goals, learn about the benefits, risks, and controversies ofhormone therapy, and order labs.  When the lab results are complete you will return to review your results, discuss your personalized treatment plan, and determine if BHRT is a good fit for you.   Although we do not accept insurance, you are able to pay for treatment with your FSA or HSA.
