Dermal Fillers: Service Overview

Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to enhance facial features and reduce the signs of aging. These injectable substances, typically made from a variety of materials including hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, are designed to add volume, smooth out wrinkles, and restore youthful contours to the face.

One of the most commonly used types of dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that helps maintain moisture and elasticity in the skin. When injected, hyaluronic acid fillers effectively plump up the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging areas. They can also be used to enhance facial features such as the lips, cheeks, and chin, providing a more defined and youthful appearance.

Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers work by stimulating the production of collagen, a protein that gives the skin its strength and structure. These fillers are often used to address deeper wrinkles and restore volume to areas that have experienced significant fat loss, such as the cheeks or temples.

Poly-L-lactic acid fillers are different from other types as they work by gradually stimulating collagen production over time. This makes them an excellent option for individuals seeking long-lasting results. They are commonly used to treat deep facial folds, such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines.

The procedure for dermal filler injections is typically quick and straightforward. After a consultation to determine the desired outcome, the healthcare professional will cleanse the treatment area and may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Using a fine needle or cannula, the filler is injected beneath the skin, targeting specific areas to achieve the desired results. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal downtime and immediate noticeable improvements.

It is important to note that the results of dermal fillers are not permanent and can last anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors. To maintain the desired effects, follow-up treatments are often recommended.Longevity depends on the areas treated and your body’s metabolism.We recommend combining  with neuromodulators because less movement equals less breakdown of volume.

Overall, dermal fillers offer a convenient and effective way to rejuvenate and enhance facial appearance without the need for invasive surgery. They can provide natural-looking results, restoring volume and smoothing out wrinkles, helping individuals achieve a more youthful and refreshed look.

Pre-Treatment Considerations

Certain services are recommended at different time intervals and you may need to avoid certain activities for a specified period of time; in general , we recommend scheduling with the following in mind (your injector will educate you on specific details pertinent to the service you are receiving. 

Before your appointment

• Schedule your injection at a time when minor swelling or bruising will not disrupt your social obligations. Each time you are treated, outcomes may vary.

• Cancel your appointment if you have any open sores in the treatment area. It is important that you alert us of any medical conditions you may have and/or any prescribed medications you are taking prior to your treatment.

• Avoid use of self tanner within 2 weeks (primarily for morpheus8)

• Avoid exposure to sun/plans to be in the sun for the following week post appointment

• Avoid or minimize hard (strenuous) exercise and exposure to extensive sun, UV lamps,  indoor tanning beds/booths, or extreme temperatures (such as a sauna) post treatment.

• Avoid recent skin therapies such as laser treatment, chemical peels, radiofrequency

• Most of our services (with the exception of neuromodulators i.e. botox) require at least 30 to 45 minutes to numb for most comfortable results.  You are welcome to come into the clinic and pick up a take-home numbing jar anytime from the time you book your appointment up until an hour prior to your appointment; this should be applied 30-45 minutes BEFORE your appointment time.  If you do not do this, please come at least 45 minutes prior to your scheduled service time to begin numbing.

Recommendations for best results:

• To lessen the likelihood of bleeding or bruising, discontinue use of blood thinning products for at least 4 days (if prescribed an anticoagulant such as Xarelto, Coumadin, etc. - you should not stop these unless approved by your prescribing provider). 

• Over the counter: aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil), naproxen, Aleve, fish oil, St. John's Wort, flax, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, etc. Alcohol should be avoided 24 hours pre- or post-injectable treatment, as all of these may increase your chance of bleeding/bruising more. 

• SinEcch: We recommend SinEcch, a homeopathic remedy designed to improve swelling and bruising that may be associated with your recovery.  Ask your provider for more details if you think you may be interested.

• Zinc: Recently, there has been some evidence that people who received COVID/ vaccination are experiencing a shorter duration of treatment effects with neuromodulators (i.e. botox).  There is also some evidence that zinc taken 5 days prior to neuromodulators has been shown to improve efficacy. If you are interested in our recommendations please ask for details. 

Any injection introduces the risk for infection. For this reason, you should be aware that though rare, the following can increase your risks:

• Have had any infection, cold, virus, or flu in the past 30 days.

• Have had any dental procedures in the past 30 days or are anticipating dental procedures or cleanings in the next 30 days (major dental work; not basic cleanings). 

• Have had any immunizations in the past 30 days or if you’re anticipating immunizations.

• Take any immunosuppressive/injectable medications (ex: Biologics such as Humira, Skyrizi, Stelara, Enbrel, Taltz,Cosentyx, Tremfya).

Dermal Filler Aftercare Instructions

• Swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, and areas of firm nodules may occur. These are typical post injection side effects. Allow TWO weeks for all to settle before scheduling any corrections. 

• Dermal fillers are long lasting, but not permanent. Longevity depends on the areas treated, filler used and your body’s metabolism. We recommend combining with neuromodulators because less movement equals less breakdown of hyaluronic acid. 

• It is ok to massage the injection site unless your injector advises you otherwise as some treatment areas should not be massaged post treatment.  

• Avoid heavy exercise the day of your treatment.

• Ice packs may be used in the treated area during the first 12 hours. Ice for 15 minutes every hour.

• If experiencing swelling, sleep with your head elevated for 2-3 days to decrease swelling.

• You may take acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort. You may also utilize ibuprofen for swelling 24 hours post injection unless otherwise noted by your injector. 

• Wait a minimum of four weeks (or as directed by your provider) before receiving any skin care or laser treatments.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact our office IMMEDIATELY to speak with a provider:

• Dusky or white discoloration of injected areas

• mottling or unusual bruising

• severe or increasing pain

• redness

• increasing warmth or coolness to touch

• severe swelling

• itching

• blisters

• difficulty swallowing or smiling

• fever or chills
