Dermal Fillers: Service Overview

Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to enhance facial features and reduce the signs of aging. These injectable substances, typically made from hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, are designed to add volume, smooth wrinkles, and restore youthful contours to the face.

Hyaluronic Acid

One of the most commonly used types of dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that helps maintain skin moisture and elasticity. When injected, hyaluronic acid fillers effectively plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. They can also be used to enhance facial features such as the lips, cheeks, and chin, providing a more defined and youthful appearance.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite

Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers work by stimulating collagen production, a protein that gives the skin its strength and structure. These fillers are often used to address deeper wrinkles and restore volume to areas that have experienced significant fat loss, such as the cheeks or temples.

Poly-L-lactic Acid

Poly-L-lactic acid fillers differ from other types because they work by gradually stimulating collagen production over time. This makes them an excellent option for individuals seeking long-lasting results. They are commonly used to treat deep facial folds, such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines.

What Happens During Dermal Filler Treatments?

The procedure for dermal filler injections is typically quick and straightforward. After a consultation to determine the desired outcome, the healthcare professional will cleanse the treatment area and may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Using a fine needle or cannula, the filler is injected beneath the skin to target specific areas and achieve the desired results. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal downtime and immediate noticeable improvements.

It is important to note that the results of dermal fillers are not permanent and can last anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors. To maintain the desired effects, follow-up treatments are often recommended. Longevity depends on the areas treated and your body’s metabolism. We recommend combining with neuromodulators because less movement equals less breakdown of volume.

Overall, dermal fillers offer a convenient and effective way to rejuvenate and enhance facial appearance without invasive surgery. They can provide natural-looking results, restoring volume and smoothing wrinkles, helping individuals achieve a more youthful, refreshed look.

Pre-Treatment Considerations

Certain services are recommended at different intervals, and you may need to avoid certain activities for a specified period of time. In general, we recommend scheduling with the following in mind (your injector will educate you on specific details pertinent to the service you are receiving).

Before your appointment:

  • Schedule your injection at a time when minor swelling or bruising will not disrupt your social obligations.
  • Cancel your appointment if you have any open sores in the treatment area. It is important that you alert us to any medical conditions you may have and/or any prescribed medications you are taking prior to your treatment.
  • Stop blood-thinning medications and supplements at least 4 days before treatment to reduce bruising, unless your prescribing provider advises otherwise for anticoagulants like Xarelto or Coumadin. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, certain vitamins, herbal supplements, and alcohol 24 hours before and after injections.
  • Consider SinEcch, a homeopathic supplement, which may help limit post-treatment swelling and bruising. Ask your provider if it’s appropriate for you.
  • Ask about zinc. Some evidence suggests that zinc taken about 5 days before neuromodulators may improve results.
  • Talk to your provider about potential infection risks, such as a recent illness, major dental work, immunizations, or immunosuppressive medications.

Dermal Filler Aftercare Instructions

  • Swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, and areas of firm nodules may occur. These are typical post injection side effects. Allow TWO weeks for all to settle before scheduling any corrections.
  • It is okay to massage the injection site unless your injector advises you otherwise.
  • Avoid heavy exercise the day of your treatment.
  • Ice packs may be used in the treated area during the first 12 hours. Ice for 15 minutes every hour.
  • If experiencing swelling, sleep with your head elevated for 2-3 days to decrease swelling.
  • You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) if you experience mild tenderness or discomfort. You may also use ibuprofen for swelling for 24 hours post-injection, unless otherwise noted by your injector.
  • Wait at least 4 weeks (or as directed by your provider) before receiving any skin care or laser treatments.
