Durolane Knee Injections in Sandy, UT

Durolane Knee Injections in Sandy, UT

Knee osteoarthritis has a way of quietly shrinking your world. Stairs turn into a calculation, walking the dog becomes a negotiation, and the activities you used to do without thinking start dropping off the calendar. Durolane is a single-injection hyaluronic acid treatment that restores the cushioning and lubrication your knee has lost, easing pain and improving movement without surgery, without steroids, and without a long recovery.

At Nervana Medical in Sandy, UT, we offer Durolane as part of a full range of non-surgical joint care. Led by Cassandra Debenham, ACNP-BC, our team takes the time to examine your knee, review what you have already tried, and recommend the option that genuinely fits your goals, whether that is Durolane, a Supartz FX series, or PRP.

What Is Durolane?

Durolane is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injection used to treat the pain of knee osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally inside your joints, where it works as both a lubricant and a shock absorber. In an arthritic knee, that natural HA thins out and breaks down, so cartilage and bone lose their cushioning and every step carries more impact. Durolane replaces that lost cushioning directly inside the joint.

What sets Durolane apart is that it is a single injection. It uses a stabilized, non-animal-derived hyaluronic acid engineered to stay in the joint longer than standard HA products, so one office visit can deliver relief that lasts up to six months. There is no weekly series to schedule and no repeated trips back to the clinic.

Benefits of Durolane Knee Injections

For the right patient, Durolane offers a straightforward path to knee pain relief:

  • One single injection, with no multi-week series to complete
  • Pain relief that can last up to six months
  • Restores lubrication and cushioning inside the knee joint
  • Non-surgical, performed at our Sandy, UT office in under an hour
  • Non-animal-derived hyaluronic acid, so no avian or shellfish allergy concern
  • Does not raise blood sugar the way corticosteroid injections can
  • Can help delay or postpone the need for knee replacement surgery

Unlike a cortisone shot, which calms inflammation for a few weeks and can weaken cartilage with repeated use, Durolane works mechanically. It restores the joint’s cushioning rather than suppressing your body’s inflammatory response.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Durolane?

Durolane is intended for adults with knee osteoarthritis who have not gotten adequate relief from conservative measures such as physical therapy, weight management, activity modification, or over-the-counter pain relievers. It is often a strong fit for patients who want long-acting relief from a single visit rather than committing to a weekly injection schedule.

Durolane may not be appropriate if you have an active infection or skin condition near the injection site, or a known sensitivity to hyaluronic acid products. During your consultation at Nervana Medical, we will examine your knee, review your imaging and medical history, and tell you honestly whether Durolane, a Supartz FX series, PRP, or something else is the better choice for you.

Durolane Pre-Procedure Guidelines

Durolane needs far less preparation than a regenerative treatment such as PRP. You can also read our full Orthopedic Injections (PRP & HA) Pre/Post Care guide at any time. A few things help your visit go smoothly:

  • Unlike PRP, you may continue anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naproxen, or Aleve before a Durolane injection.
  • Tell us about any blood-thinning medication or supplement you take. You generally do not need to stop it, but we do need to know.
  • Let us know about any sensitivity to hyaluronic acid products, and about any active infection, cut, or rash on or near the knee.
  • If you have had a corticosteroid injection in the same knee recently, tell us the date. We may want to space the two treatments apart.
  • Wear loose pants or shorts so the knee is easy to access during your appointment.
  • On the day of your procedure, eat normally and drink plenty of water. Plan to take the rest of the day easy.

**If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or any history of joint infection, please tell us before your appointment so we can review your candidacy carefully.

Durolane: Post-Procedure Guidelines

Most patients walk out and drive themselves home. Plan to take it easy for the remainder of the day, avoiding strenuous activity, prolonged standing, running, and heavy lifting for the first 48 hours so the injection settles into the joint.

0 – 3 days post-procedure guidelines.

Mild soreness, warmth, stiffness, or swelling in the knee is common for a day or two and is not a cause for concern. Gentle movement is encouraged, since normal walking helps distribute the hyaluronic acid through the joint. Ice can be applied for 15 to 20 minutes at a time if the knee feels sore.

In the first few days after your Durolane injection, please avoid the following:

  • Strenuous or high-impact activity such as running, jumping, heavy squats, or long hikes for 48 hours
  • Hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools for 48 hours, to reduce infection risk at the injection site
  • Prolonged standing or weight-bearing beyond what is comfortable

Other Important Guidelines to Follow After Your Durolane Injection

  • Keep the injection site clean and dry for the first 24 hours
  • You may take acetaminophen or an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen for soreness unless your provider has told you otherwise
  • Avoid consumption of any alcoholic beverages for the first 24 hours
  • Resume gentle range-of-motion movement the same day. Do not immobilize the knee
  • Call our office if you develop a fever, increasing redness, significant swelling, or pain that worsens rather than improves after 72 hours

2 to 4 Weeks After Your Durolane Injection

Durolane is not an instant fix. Some patients notice a difference within the first week, but meaningful relief usually builds over two to four weeks as the hyaluronic acid restores lubrication throughout the joint. This is the point at which you should be returning to your normal activity level.

  • Return to your regular exercise routine as comfort allows, favoring low-impact activity such as walking, cycling, or swimming
  • Continue any physical therapy or strengthening program. Durolane works best alongside strong quadriceps and hip muscles
  • Keep track of how the knee feels week to week so we have useful information at your follow-up visit

Long-Term Results and Repeat Treatment

Relief from a single Durolane injection commonly lasts up to six months, though this varies with the severity of your arthritis, your activity level, and your overall joint health. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled so we can assess how well the injection worked and plan the next step together.

Durolane can be repeated once the effect wears off. Many patients settle into a rhythm of one injection roughly every six months, which keeps them active and can postpone the knee replacement conversation for years.

Durolane also pairs well with the rest of what we do. Some patients combine HA injections with PRP, weight management support, or physical therapy and get better results than any single treatment delivers on its own.

The road to your recovery is just as important as the procedure itself. If you have questions at any point along the way, it would be our pleasure to discuss them with you. We look forward to working with you on your journey to improved health.
