Sculptra® is an FDA-approved injectable that stimulates your skin’s own natural collagen production to restore facial volume and youthfulness over time. Made from a biocompatible synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, it gradually replaces lost collagen and improves the appearance of deep wrinkles, folds, and facial hollowness.
Collagen is one of the most important structural proteins in the body and plays a critical role in maintaining firm, youthful-looking skin. It acts as the internal support system that gives skin its strength, elasticity, and ability to hold shape. Over time, natural collagen production gradually slows, typically beginning in early adulthood, and the collagen that remains becomes thinner and less organized. This process contributes to common signs of aging such as skin laxity, fine lines, wrinkles, volume loss, and decreased skin resilience. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle habits, and overall skin health can accelerate this decline. At Nervana Medical in Sandy, Utah, we focus on treatments that support and stimulate natural collagen production through personalized, long-term treatment strategies. By combining biostimulators, regenerative biologics, advanced aesthetic devices, and medical-grade skincare, our goal is to strengthen the skin’s underlying structure and promote healthier, more youthful skin over time rather than relying on short-term solutions alone.

Common Treatment Areas
Sculptra® is commonly injected into areas where collagen loss and volume depletion contribute to skin laxity, contour changes, and loss of structural support. The most frequently treated facial areas include the cheeks and midface to restore volume and improve facial balance, the temples to address hollowing, and the lower face to soften nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and areas of jawline or chin volume loss while improving overall skin thickness and firmness. In addition to facial rejuvenation, Sculptra® is also widely used for body treatments, including the buttocks for non-surgical buttock enhancement, often referred to as a Sculptra® Butt Lift, where it helps improve volume, contour, and skin quality. It may also be used in other body areas such as the hips, thighs, or décolletage to support collagen production and improve skin texture. At Nervana Medical in Sandy, Utah, treatment areas are carefully selected based on individualized assessments to create gradual, natural-looking improvements and long-term collagen stimulation for both facial and body rejuvenation.

How Does Sculptra Work?
Sculptra works by initially filling a wrinkle with small PLLA beads. As the beads biodegrade, the body may produce new collagen at the site of injection. Sculptra is injected with multiple small injections using a fine needle in a grid pattern to correct a wrinkle at the nasolabial fold or other facial wrinkles where this injection technique is appropriate.
Are Results From Sculptra Immediate?
No. Unlike other wrinkle fillers, Sculptra provides a gradual improvement of the depressed area over several months. It may seem that your treatment worked immediately because of swelling caused by the injection and the water used to dilute Sculptra. This usually resolves in several hours to a few days and may cause the original wrinkle to reappear. Visible wrinkle correction results appear slowly. Your healthcare provider should see you again in three or more weeks to decide if you need additional injections.
How Long Do Sculptra Effects Last?
Results for some subjects lasted for up to 25 months after the last treatment session. However, the improvement depended on the severity of the nasolabial fold wrinkle (WAS score) that a subject had before treatment. Discuss with your health care provider the optimal cosmetic correction you may expect.
Do Sculptra Injections Hurt?
As with any injection, to decrease pain, a topical or local anesthetic may be used when injecting Sculptra. In a U.S. clinical study, subjects recorded pain in diaries: 71% of all treated patients reported some pain after the first injection, 14% of subjects had moderate pain. Most pain resolved within 24 hours.
Pre/Post-Treatment Guidelines
Massage: The 5-5-5 Rule
To reduce the risk of nodules:
● Massage treated areas 5 minutes
● 5 times per day
● For 5 days
Use moderate pressure similar to applying moisturizer. Consistent massage is important.
First 24–48 Hours
● Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
● Avoid excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga, hot tubs).
● Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
● You may apply makeup after 24 hours.
● Ice may be applied gently for swelling or discomfort.
Contact our office immediately if you experience:
● Increasing pain
● Significant redness or warmth
● Skin discoloration
● Signs of infection
● Persistent or enlarging firm nodules
What to Expect Immediately After Treatment
Normal side effects:
● Swelling (most common; may last 2–5 days)
● Tenderness or soreness
● Mild bruising
● Firmness or small temporary lumps at injection sites
● Temporary “full” appearance from the sterile water used to reconstitute the product (this resolves within
several days)
You may appear fuller initially — this is from fluid and will subside as it absorbs.
Collagen Stimulation Timeline
Sculptra is a biostimulatory injectable that works gradually by stimulating your body’s own collagen production.
Results develop over time and require patience. Sculptra works by triggering a controlled inflammatory response that stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen.
Week 1–2:
Inflammatory phase begins. The body responds to the product and starts activating collagen-producing cells.
Week 3–6:
Early collagen formation begins. Subtle skin texture and firmness changes may start.
Week 6–12:
Noticeable collagen deposition occurs. Gradual improvement in volume, skin thickness, and structure becomes
visible.
3–6 Months:
Peak collagen production and visible structural improvement.
Beyond 6 Months:
Collagen continues remodeling and strengthening. Results can last 2+ years, depending on age, metabolism, and
number of treatment sessions.
Most patients require a series of 2–3 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart for optimal collagen building.
Important Information
Small palpable areas can occur but usually soften with massage and time. Delayed nodules are uncommon but can
occur weeks to months later. Your Provider will discuss risks and benefits with you during your consultation.
Long Term Expectations
Sculptra improves:
● Facial volume loss
● Skin laxity
● Overall skin thickness and quality
● Structural support
What Are My Other Options?
There are a variety of dermal fillers available in the US. Prices, safety and effectiveness vary. Consult with your physician to determine which one is right for you.
