Is someone’s metabolic rate proportional to their weight? What about to their weight loss?

According to this article published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, someone’s metabolic rate doesn’t remain proportional to their weight when accounting for major weight loss, even when attempts are made to preserve fat free mass. The study consisted of 16 subjects that were all classified as obese with around 49% body fat. After 30 weeks of dieting through caloric restriction and a mixture of aerobic exercise and circuit training to maintain fat free mass, the patients had lost about one-third of their weight. The results of their change in metabolic rate was measured after, showing the disproportional relationship to their weight loss.

This is why it is more essential than ever to have precise RMR readings to know what kind of caloric intake a weight loss patient requires.
